Our Relatives at Standing Rock Need Your Help Today
We have watched the escalating brutality of the Morton County, North Dakota sheriff’s office and their out-of-state bullies for months as they protect private oil interests instead of the rights of people. Dog attacks, misleading information in the press, security planes flying night and day over the camps scrambling phone reception, pepper spray, tear gas, rubber bullets, LRAD sound cannons, and now, in freezing temperatures, even water cannons are being used.
Sunday night, the violence of Morton County’s sheriff’s office continued. Witnesses reported that the water protectors were unarmed, yet the police were targeting their hands, heads, and groin area with rubber bullets. The Standing Rock Medic and Healer Council reports that over 300 were injured. According to Democracy Now, observers from the National Lawyers Guild said that multiple people temporarily lost consciousness after being shot. Unicorn Riot’s videos of the confrontation clearly show water cannons being used despite Morton County’s statement to the contrary. Hundreds were treated for hypothermia. One woman’s arm was so badly injured after an injury from a concussion grenade she may have it amputated. You can donate to her medical fund here.
This is happening in the United States of America, right now, in 2016. This is not right.
We will not stand by and let this continue to happen. Will you take action today?
Please make these calls today to help stop this injustice:
- Call President Obama and ask that he deploy federal marshals to immediately stop Dakota Access’ construction of the pipeline and enforce the stay on construction made by the US Army Corps. Dakota Access does not yet have the needed permits to drill beneath the Missouri River and should not be continuing to prepare the drill pad near Lake Oahe: White House Public Comment Line (202-456-1111) and White House Situation Room 202-456-9431
- Call the United States Department of Justice and insist they investigate the use of violence against these unarmed water protectors as civil rights violations: 202-353-1555 DOJ comment line or 202-514-2000 DOJ switchboard
- Call US Army Corps and specifically Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of Army Corp of Engineers to insist they deny Dakota Access a permit to drill beneath Lake Oahe at the Missouri River: Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of Army Corp of Engineers (703) 697-8986 and US Army Corps 202-761-5903
Also, please make calls as well to let those who’ve sent militarized police to North Dakota know that they are on the wrong side of history and should go home.
Thank you for continuing to stand with Standing Rock and all who oppose this pipeline.
The world is watching. Thank you for being in this struggle for the long haul. We know we are on the right side of history.
In solidarity,
The Bakken Pipeline Resistance Coalition
